When you are fluent and really need to refine your communication skills, one-on-one coaching is the way to go. Everyone is busy and most group training is too general, meaning you can spend a lot of time sitting in a class while things that you already feel confident about get covered. Private coaching is time-efficient, focused on your needs only and, consequently, cost effective. But it can be quite difficult to get funded for one-on-one coaching, since private training can be expensive and often employers are hesitant and may be unable to cover the costs.
But now there is a very exciting option. Human resources professionals, managers, directors and employees themselves should all know about this new program which has hardly been tapped to date. Now the Canadian government is funding a very flexible training program which is employer driven. The employer chooses:
- who to train
- what to train in
- who does the training
This program, called Canada-Ontario Jobs Grant, provides up to $10,000 per employee to cover training and the employers, depending upon their size, only needs to contribute 1/6th or 1/3 of the cost. The wonderful thing is that this funding is going to continue for at least 5 years so it is something employers can plan for. And if you act very fast, they are practically handing money out since they want to distribute$29 million dollars before the end of March 2015 or else they have to return it to the federal government.
The application process can take about two weeks, so if you act fast, it will be very easy to get funded. But no worries, because in April new funding will be coming. But it is advisable to apply early before the word really gets out.
