This linguistic map of the US shows variations in how the word ‘lawyer” is pronounced across the country. In Canada we generally say loy-er. The following post shows how a number of terms vary in their pronunciation across the US. While Canada is not represented, most of our population is just on the border, so you can assume that we will be pretty similar to what lies just south of us.

 

 

 

 

See How Americans Speak English Totally Differently From One Another

Everyone knows Americans don’t agree on pronunciations. That’s great, because regional accents are a major part of what makes American English so interesting.

Joshua Katz, a Ph.D student of statistics at North Carolina State University, just published a group of awesome visualizations of Professor Bert Vaux and Scott Golder’s linguistic survey, which looked at how Americans pronounce words (via detsl on /r/Linguistics). His results were first published on The Abstract, the NC State University research blog. Katz gave us permission to publish some of the coolest maps from his collection.
