Current Courses

We have two pronunciation courses running in late 2016. These courses are intended for a general audience interested in learning about Canadian pronunciation and how to adjust an accent. Please read below for the details.

Upcoming Pronunciation Courses

NOVEMBER 2016 – PART 1 – CANADIAN PRONUNCIATION – THE ELEMENTS

We are running this introductory course three consecutive Wednesday evenings in November 2016 at our training space at Bathurst and Bloor. Please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested. Here are the details:

WHO IS THIS FOR?
For anyone with the ability to understand and speak in English who is interested in learning more about Canadian pronunciation. Classes are given in English at a normal rate of speech meaning all participants must be able to understand the explanations and orientations. If you are at a higher level of English, please note that issues related to pronunciation cross all skill levels. If you believe your accent needs some work but at a very refined level, you are probably a better candidate for one-on-one coaching.

WHAT IS THE COURSE?
This is an introduction to the sounds of Canadian English. This three week group course covers all the basic building blocks of Canadian English pronunciation – the vowels, the consonants and the global aspects, including stress, intonation and phrasing. All materials (print and audio) are included. It is intended as a general introduction and sets the base for the following course to be held in November and December (see below) which will help the student apply the knowledge.

DECEMBER 2016 – PART 2 – CANADIAN PRONUNCIATION – PUTTING THE ELEMENTS TOGETHER

This course builds on the previous three-session course run early to mid November which is, therefore, a prerequisite.  The course will be held on consecutive Wednesday evenings in November and December 2016 at our training space at Bathurst and Bloor. Please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested. Here are the details:

WHO IS THIS FOR?
For anyone who has completed the previous three-session course which is a prerequisite. If you did not take the November series and are still interested in this series, please contact us. If you have studied with us previously, you may qualify. If not, we might be able to catch you up with a few one-on-one sessions.

WHAT IS THE COURSE?
This three week group course builds on the basic building blocks of Canadian pronunciation, covered in the previous level, and teaches you how to apply that knowledge – how to practice and gradually adjust your accent – moving from individual words to words in context to every-day speech; how to use the information previously given to prepare for presentations; clarifying the finer details of the pronunciation of specific vowels and consonants; and learning how to integrate issues related to rhythm (stress, intonation and phrasing) into your speech. All materials (print and audio) are included. It is intended as a practical follow up for the previous course, allowing you to integrate the knowledge and develop a study plan for yourself.

OCTOBER 20, 2012 -ING PRESENTATION

Heather Chetwynd, Director of Voice to Word Consulting, presented at the innovative ING Café in downtown Toronto on October 20, 2012. In her seminar, entitled “Communicating in Canada, Eh? – A fun look at what you need to consider,” Heather explored how easily things can get misinterpreted in often surprising ways. Examples from three areas – vocabulary, pronunciation and culture – helped to illuminate how miscommunication often takes place and what to pay attention to for both non-native and native speakers.
