TOWES is the acronym for the Test of Workplace Essential Skills. The Essential Skills have been categorized by the Canadian government as a way to standardize the skill requirements for each profession. They are also becoming the standard for evaluating a potential employee instead of using the more discriminatory “Canadian experience” requirement for newcomers to Canada.
This site allows you to test yourself in some of these skill areas (mostly reading, writing and numeracy.) You can TEST yourself by level first and then test yourself in specific areas, by clicking on the PRACTICE link.
You can read more about the 9 Essential Skills (hyperlinked here) which are::
- Document Use
- Oral Communication
- Working With Others
- Digital Technology
- Continuous Learning
Many are difficult to evaluate without a lot of hands-on work, especially expectations around culturally appropriate oral communication and team work. This is where Voice to Word Consulting can help if you find you are unsure of Canadian cultural expectations.
